Patrick Ngugi aka Jayso: Kenya, Malaysia, Atlanta

March 30, 2009

This is the tenth episode of our continuing series on “Kenyan Artists in the Diaspora.” We go to Atlanta, Georgia to catch up with Patrick Ngugi aka Jayso who is our featured artist this week.

Jayso was born in the town of Thika, Kenya. Having fallen in love with music at an early age, Jayso was always where all the action was. In the church choir, school music festivals, the local clubs and competing in music talent shows. Jayso relocated to Malaysia after his secondary school education where he found his music dentity. He became the only foreigner to have won the famed Malaysian Star Talent search which earned him enough money to take his trade to the next level.

Jayso relocated one more time. This time to Atlanta, Georgia, USA where he currently calls home. Jayso’s long anticipated album debuts later this year, after which he plans to tour the U S to promote it. The upcoming album features, among others, kenya’s own Pilipili, R n B singer JSoul, Grand Hustle’s, Young LA and rapper Da’ Brat.

When I asked Jayso what his aspirations were, this is what he said. “I want to reach the sun, put Kenya higher up on the global musical map and always keep it real. I will always be that jamaa from Kamesh, Thika town.”
