Kilimanjaro Records
Kilimanjaro Records, our sister company, was established in 2006 with the aim of marketing African music through compilation CD’s. Our first CD, Unbwogable, by Gidigidi Maimaji was released in 2003. The second CD, Shine Africa, by Innocent(Tanzanian roots reggae artist) followed in July of 2006. The third CD, Nare, by Daddy V, hit the stores in May 2008. We are working on our fourth album for release in 2010.
HOW WE STARTED
This all begun as a hobby. We started off organizing and promoting Kenyan and East African concerts and gradually took a more African perspective. With so much negativity and miseducation about Africa in the media, we were convinced that music and arts events would be the perfect platform for educating people about Africa and for promoting African culture.
We still plan and promote our own events and concerts. Our concerts usually feature up and coming African artists in the North American Diaspora although some artists do come from Africa. We host a monthly event called Wachilia (Swahili for release) at the Blue NIle Lounge, 20278 E. Franklin Avenue, Minneapolis, MN. This event brings together the African community in the Twin Cities on every first Saturday of the month. Wachilia features African, reggae and Urban dj music.
